Dedication
This book is dedicated to the tens of thousands of crime victims and their families who have seen their assailants brought to justice, to the thousands of falsely accused who have been exonerated, and to the hundreds of thousands of children who will grow up knowing who their biological parents are...all with the help of DNA testing.

The Authors
Howard C. Coleman is the president and chairman of GeneLex Corporation, the Seattle-based DNA laboratory he founded in 1987. After reading the first reports of "DNA fingerprinting" in British scholarly journals in 1985, Coleman ended his graduate studies in molecular biology to establish a forensic and paternity DNA testing laboratory. GeneLex has become a nationally recognized pioneer in the field. The pH30 testing probe developed by GeneLex is acknowledged to be an industry standard.
Coleman has appeared as an expert witness for both the defense and prosecution in numerous court cases, and has spoken scores of times to forensic science, law, and student groups. He is the author of several scholarly papers on forensic DNA analysis, has patented a DNA testing device, and was the author of a National Institute of Justice grant in 1987 for the forensic applications of DNA methods. This year he was elected a director of the Human Identity Trade Association and has been a guest on Larry King Live, Rivera Live, and the CNN morning news among others. He is currently at work with Eric Swenson on Silent Witness: DNA and Criminal Justice in America, a full-length study of the "DNA Wars" of which the Simpson case may be the last major battle.
Eric D. Swenson, in the last decade, has written or co-authored five books including The Complete Baseball Player, with Dave Winfield (Avon 1990). He has also written more than 80 magazine articles and broadcast 50 commentaries for National Public Radio affiliates in the Northwest. Swenson has taught advanced writing about science and technology, technical writing, and other writing classes at several colleges and universities, including Oregon State University and the University of Washington.
